The Grinch Page For Teachers -
Lessons, Links, Printables, and more!

Update: November, 2006

Special thanks to the teachers at The Heart mailring that have shared their ideas with me. They must have hearts three sizes too big . They are willing to take the time to help teachers that visit this site! Thanks!

"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. "Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!" - The Grinch

Some of Max's favorite teachers have a heart so big and have shared a few ideas.

The story indicates that no one quite knew why the Grinch hated Christmas so much. Have your students make guess as to why the Grinch hated Christmas.

Cindy-Lou was easily fooled by the Grinch. Create a Venn Diagram with you class. Have the students list the similarities of the two in the middle circle and the differences on the outside circles. Your class wouldn't be fooled by the Grinch!

The Theme of the Grinch is all about the Joy that Christmas brings... Make a large pattern with the word Joy in bubble letters. Have you students trace the pattern on colored paper. Where the O is, have the children place a circle picture of themselves to make the hole in the O. Then have the students brainstorm things that bring them joy. Then they may write the things that bring them Joy on the letters.

Have students write their own "Grinchy" stories.

The Big Bad Wizard Who Stole Winter Break.

The Fink Who Ruined Halloween.

The Cat What Ran Off With My Sock.

etc.

- Shawn

How would your students make a Grinch Grin. Brainstorm some ways they might make a Grinch grin. Then make a class book that is titled, "WE MADE THE GRINCH GRIN!" Have each student complete the sentence. To make a Grinch grin I would... and then illustrate their sentences! Bond these together to make a great class book.

I saw the Grinch idea that follows on someone's website.  I think it said it came from Teachers Helper a number of years ago but I couldn't find the old issue, so I traced a picture of the grinch from the book and blew it up for the kids to trace.   You can have each child trace and color a grinch and in his smile, they write their story of  "How I got the grinch to grin".   My kids loved this.  Some of the kids said they brought their grinch to school where he got smart so he grinned.  Some of them read him jokes to make him grin.  One gave him a puppy friend for Max...they really were thinking.    They loved this whole grinch writing season, now please don't ask why, no one quite knows the reason!  Happy Holidays to all. Here is a free printable from Teaching is a Work of Heart!!! Have your students fill in this Grinch report after they read the story & watch the movie. Click Here!

Colleen, my students love to hear the CD from the movie while they work. They love the song... "Your A Mean One Mr. Grinch" so I took the song and made a cover page that gives all the credit to the author but divided the song into 15 parts, put the part at the bottom of a page and had students illustrate the part of the story they got. I have 16 students and one got the cover page. I bind it together and this becomes one of our books, it really is a favorite
with the class.

Grinch Candy Canes Poem

Purchase the green colored candy canes and attach the following poem:

When the Grinch discovered
There was no way,
To Keep Christmas from coming
On Christmas day,
He devised a new plan...
Though not quite as mean.
He licked all the candy canes,
Til he turned them all green.

(You can print these tags and tie them to a candy cane with ribbon. Click here to print these cute tags and give your students a candy cane treat with GRINCH written all over it!)

Or You Could Change this poem a bit and make green cookies. Wrap the cookies in the bag and attach this poem. I have a cookie press and I often add green food coloring to my favorite recipe to make green cookies!

When the Grinch discovered
There was no way,
To Keep Christmas from coming
On Christmas day,
He devised a new plan...
Though not quite as mean.
He licked all the cookies,
Til he turned them all green.

MAGIC GRINCH DUST!!

Don't let the Grinch steal your Christmas.
You must be on your guard.
Before retiring on Christmas Eve,
Sprinkle this dust out on your yard.

The Grinch will see your magic dust,
And know you've taken great care,
To protect your home and family,
And keep Christmas joy in the air.
