Penguin Vocab

South Pole, Antartica, flippers, ocean, penguins, emperor, feathers, diving, swim, slide, tuxedos, waddle, colony, nests, stones, chick, hatch, winter, weather, snow, temperature, rookery

There is so much you can do with vocab. I like to introduce each word in a powerpoint. I include the word, meaning, and a picture. It is also a good idea to display your vocab. words on a special word wall. I have use a large penguin cut-out and placed the words on the white tummy of the penguin! Your students can use the word wall when they write about penguins. You may also play games with the vocab. - bingo is fun to play with the words.

Penguin Punctuation Center

In a pocket chart place a few sentences about penguins. Leave off the punctuation.
The student must place the correct punctuation next to the sentnce.

For Instance:

Penguins like to slide on ice

Do you see the little penguin

(The student would need to place the correct punctuation at the end)

This center and all it's parts are found on CDROM # 2
You will also find a center sheet to match this center on the CDROM

Penguin Songs, Poems, Fingerplays

Sung to: I'm a Little Teapot
I'm a little penguin,
on the ice.
I think the cold is very nice.
I can hop around
first once, then twice.
I think ice is very nice.
Also, when I taught a penguin unit, we acted out the father
penguins guarding the eggs on their feet while the moms "waddled"
away to eat. We used plastic Easter eggs. The kids enjoyed that!

Penguin Thoughts
Have you ever seen penguins in picture books?
I always smile when I see their looks.
They look like men in their fancy suits,
All black and white from head to boots.
I often wonder when it snows,
Do they freeze their little penguin toes?
Do they shiver and shake in their land of ice?
Sitting on icebergs CAN'T BE NICE!

Three Little Penguins

Three little penguins, dressed in white and black.
Waddle, waddle forward and waddle right back!
Three little penguins, in a funny pose,
They are wearing their evening clothes.
Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right.
They stand on the ice and they look very neat,
As they waddle along on their little flat feet.

Sung to: "The Twelve Days of Christmas"

I went to the South Pole and what did I see?
A little penguin baby, sitting on the ice.
Two penguin friends,
Three penguin girls,
Four penguin boys,
Fire penguin kings!
Six penguins flapping,
Seven penguins swimming,
Eight penguins hopping,
Nine penguins turning,
Ten penguins smiling,
All penguins dancing!
