I am looking for a lesson involving
the Dr. Seuss book The Shape of
Me and Other Stuff>
I made a matching game to go kind of with this book. I
cut out
simple pictures (cat, hat, fish, etc) from black paper
and on the
other cards, I put the word for each picture. I tried to
use only
one picture for each beginning sound so they could match
using that
if they couldn't figure out the whole word. (I teach
kindergarten)

Monday: We will have
a huge cake with 100 candles ( for Dr. Seuss'
100th bday) and will sing happy birthday to Dr.
Seuss during breakfast (school wide). The Cat
in the Hat (aka librarian) will be there as will Thing 1
and Thing 2. Students will be served the cake
on their lunch trays. Also, the Cat in the Hat
will read to all classes that day, one at a time.
Tuesday: Students will wear
their Cat in the Hat hats (made in class on
Mon.). Guest readers from the admin building and
community will read a Dr. Seuss book to each class.
Wed: Pajama day-students can
wear their pjs to school. Again, guest readers will
read to each class.
Thur: Hat day
Fri: Breakfast in the
cafeteria will be green eggs and ham. Also,
red and white day (our school colors) These are
just the school wide things that are planned.
I haven't thought out exactly what I am doing
in my classroom yet-can't get caught up, let alone a
few steps ahead!!LOL! Elizabeth/AR

Our children will be taking standardized test all week
so most of our activites will be on fri when we will
hold a door decorating contest to see which class can
guess which book is represented by each door. WE will
also have cookies on the court on Fri while we sing
Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss. We'll have a trivia
contest from questions the children compose.
I also found other activities online for the children
to do in their room after testing.

The Pre-K, K, 1st & 2nd grade teachers all dress up
as the Cat-in-the-
Hat. The Pre-K and K aide dress as Thing One & Thing
Two. All
morning long, the upper grades come to read to us. The
teachers all
bring their Seuss books, the library lends us their Seuss
books, the
kids bring their books, we go to several libraries and
get all the
Seuss books we can so there are enough to go around.
Since the Cat-in-the-Hat movie has come out, the teachers
have all
been collecting Seuss stuff that has been very abundant.
We have
stickers, games, stuffed critters, books, etc. We will
each have a
large display in our classrooms and will make learning
centers out of
the various items.
For snack we serve green eggs and ham. Since this is the
good
doctor's 100th we will be having birthday cake and
singing.
Also, our school library has a featured author each month
with
teachers at various grade levels doing a bulletin board.
K is doing
the board this month.
During the afternoon we will have a Seuss movie marathon:
Cat-in-the-
Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax, The Grich, etc.
As gifts for our upper grade reading buddies, we will
give them
bookmarks made at the www.dltk_kids.com site. Last year
we made cat-
in-the-hat pins out of puzzle pieces for our reading
buddies, but
each year this gets to be a bigger event as more grades
want to
participate.

Geez! I almost forgot one of the
most fun activities. My teaching
partner holds a photo contest. We ask for pictures of the
kids
reading a Seuss book in the wackiest place they can think
of. We
make a bulletin board display of these pictures and have
the upper
grade teachers vote on the them. The winners from each
class get a
copy of a Seuss book.
Our Pre-K & K graduation theme this year is Dr. Seuss
so we will be
using these pictures in our slide show also at the end of
the year.

Hi! I am new to the list. My name is Suzanne and I
am a K-3 music specialist. I am organizing an assembly
for Dr. Seuss's 100th birthday. We are having two
high school students read "Green Eggs and
Ham," Every time the words green eggs and ham
are read, the students sing: "Green Eggs and
Ham (clap, clap), Green Eggs and Ham (clap, clap), Strike
up the band for Green Eggs and Ham." tune is:
do, re,re mi. mi, fa, fa sol sol, la, la, sol, fa
mi, re, re do.

Something I do for math is do a venn diagram of red fish
blue fish. I make some red fish and some blue fish,
and then I make some fish that are red and blue.
Then the students have to sort them into a venn diagram.

I have planned a special all day celebration for Tuesday
- I teach K. First off, with some of my students
having birthdays during times we are not in school, being
away ect, we are going to have a class birthday
celebration. Kids can make birthday crowns in the
morning, I am going to bring in candles and cake for an
afternoon snack, and I have a little birthday book gift
for each of them. To Dr. Seuss day. I have invited
children to bring in related items such as toys, books
and t-shirts to share during our opening. I am
covering Dr. Seuss books all month, but on this day I am
featuring 2, Bartholomew and the Oobleck and Cat in the
Hat. In the morning, I have invited parents in for an
hour. I will read Bartholomew and the Oobleck and
then parents and kids can make oobleck. We will see
what we can do with oobleck, what it is. Kids can
draw, parents can write. My journaling activity will be
drawing and printing - What would you do if we had
oobleck fall? I have invited parents in again for
an hour in the afternoon and we will read the Cat in the
Hat. I then have 3 centres planned - I have a very
small class of six children. The first centre will
be the kids and parents colouring a cat in the hat
tic-tac-toe game. Second one is the colour dice
game (I found all these on the Teaching is a work of
heart site) I have laminated the paper portion and will
use dry erase markers. The last centre will be
matching upper and lower case alphabet letters.
After the parents leave we will make a Cat in the Hat
craft. I am so excited about all the cool
things you can do with Dr. Seuss books. My class is
excited as my husband is a chef and he is coming in to
cook with them the following week when I feature the book
Green Eggs and Ham - that is a fave book in my room.
I would love to hear what others are doing - get
some ideas for next year or for the last couple of books
I have yet to plan for. Take care Carolyn in
Paddle Prairie

1. For One Fish, Two Fish...you could have the children
estimate Swedish fish, or graph goldfish crackers. They
could also graph a baggie full.
2. For The Lorax have the children design posters for the
environment.
3. For My Many Colored Days check out the poetry frames
at http://www.berkeleyprep.org/lower/fourth/writing/emotion_poem.htm
Your children could do the color poem on the bottom, just
put the frame at the center!
4. For Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! have the children
write a special song for your school like in the story.
Since I assume you will have centers for groups they
could perform them too!
5. For Oh! The Thinks You Can Think have the children
invent wacky inventions and write about what they will do
and draw them!
6. We did a quilt square for our favorite Seuss book and
made a cute class quilt.
7. You can of course make Oobleck and have the children
fill out a paper what it looks, feels, smells like
etc.(It would be neat to let each group make a small
batch)
8. You could tape record all sorts of sounds and put them
at a listening center with a paper _____ hears a _______.
(Horton hears a Who inspired!) You could also go on a
listening walk and record sounds you hear. For a fun game
write down objects and animals that make sounds and play
name that sound!
9. Have them design a map of a magical world like Candy
Land, TV Land , etc., for Oh, the Places You'll Go!
10. Suess Cafe. Make some
"seuss" money for the children to plan a meal
of your wacky menu. From Green Eggs and ham to Foot Book
Stew you can make this one higher level by increasing the
prices, adding tax or making change!
11. Horton Hatches a WHAT??? Have the children invent a
wacky animal that is parts of three different animals
Design an egg that lifts open to show their new creature.
Maybe a Cheeturtguin!
12. For Mr. Brown can Moo..play the what can you do too
game. You do not have to use balloons to pop, since that
can be scary. Have each child write down a talent they
have can be anything safe to do in school. (children in
the past have written their names backwards, etc.) They
write it on a slip of paper. Put it inside a balloon and
blow it up. Mix up the balloons and have children choose
one to pop. (They can just choose a slip if you want no
balloons) They pop it and guess who can do the talent
then the person shows the class!
For a cute seuss snack make one tray red and one tray
blue Jell-O jigglers or rice krispie treats cut into fish
shapes with a cutter!
Lori

I saw something today I thought was
a cute idea for younger children. Have a Book-nic! Spread
out picnic blankets on the floor where the children can
relax and enjoy cookies and punch as you read Dr. Seuss
books to them. Everyone else keeps saying to cook green
eggs and ham. That might be fun. I made book marks for
the students (4th grade) but we are doing FCAT testing
this week so not too much going on for Dr. Seuss'
birthday. Hope this helps! Sherri

I
read "My Many Colored
Days". The children were
traced on colored bulletin board
paper and then cut out the shapes. The
children explained the mood their shape
was in and I hung them flat against the
ceiling. It looks like we have a colorful
rainbow of children floating up
there! It turned out
great! Roni
